Dish with One Spoon Treaty

Gdoonaagidnaa
Dish with One Spoon Treaty

The Simcoe County Food Council recognizes, upholds and honours the Dish With One Spoon Treaty - Gdoonaagidnaa,  which originates here in the Great Lakes region and offers guidance on how we live together within our shared territories.

It reminds us that we are all treaty people, connected through shared relationships and responsibilities to the land and to one another.

The spirit and intent of this treaty sets out principles that have guided how people have lived together for generations:  to take only what is needed, to care for the lands and waters, and to live in peace with all it's inhabitants.

For centuries, these practices have supported balance across the land and waters. Through shared stewardship, they have helped sustain healthy ecosystems and strong communities containing some of the cleanest freshwater and fertile agricultural lands in the world.

We understand the well-being of our lands and waters, the well-being of our people, and the well-being of our communities are all deeply connected - particularly the environments in which our food is grown, shared, and accessed - and is at the heart of the Gdoonaagidnaa treaty.

When we take only what we need and ensure there is

enough for others, we help create communities where

everyone always has a place at the table to eat.

These teachings continue to guide us, and in this way,

honouring our treaty relationships offers a shared path

forward rooted in sustainability, collective well-being,

and shared prosperity for generations to come.
