What is Food Literacy?
Understanding how to cook and make food choices is a crucial part of being food literate. Food literacy includes things like knowing about nutrition, having cooking skills, feeling confident about food choices, considering factors like income and the food system, and more.
The Canada’s Food Guide Dietary Guidelines highlight how important it is to have these skills, especially with the easy access we have to highly processed foods nowadays. These skills are essential for managing the complicated world of food, and they can be learned and shared in many ways – in person, online, or a mix of both.
Food literacy programs cover a range of activities, like learning about nutrition, understanding food safety, cooking demos, getting involved in community gardens, decoding nutrition labels, attending cooking classes, going on grocery tours, planning meals on a budget, and more! It's all about helping everyone improve their relationship with food, in their own way.
